social media empowering global change
I am a little late in discovering this amazing global project but my hope is that maybe some of you are also unaware of what I am about to discuss…and the connection it has to music and social media makes it 100% necessary to share.
Twestival which stands for Twitter Festival is a global collaborative movement. California-based nonprofit public benefit corporation Connect the Dots is the owner of the site and the effort itself. Each event is put together by volunteers using social media like Twitter to promote and organize.
Not only do I love how social media is the center of this movement, but it also has an outreach to make the world a better place. All profits from the events go to a charity of the committee’s choosing. This year the project was focused on getting children educated around the world. Concern Worldwide was the recipient of this year’s efforts. This non-governmental, international, humanitarian organization is working in an effort to diminish poverty.
In February of 2009 the project centered on the clean water crisis. The money raised was used to create 5 wells in Uganda, Ethiopia and India. This had a direct impact for over 17,000 people! This year’s efforts are still being calculated but you can check out the progress online.
I uncovered this awesome project when I was searching for new music on buzznet (a cool social media network site focused on music and the media). An article talked about a recent Twestival in California. The Roxy in LA had just hosted a festival. During the show Tweets with a hashtag for Twestival were streaming on a screen. One band featured was the Metric. If you’re into indie rock they’re worth a listen. You can also check out twestival FM to discover new music from around the globe and donate to the cause.
Have you heard of these Twestivals? If so did you get involved? I challenge you to look into it and find out what you can do to help. I will join you and hopefully social media can be used to positively affect the world.
